Transportation of Delaware

Interstate Highway System and Interstate 95 are the major branches that the state crosses across New Castle County running from southwest to northwest.

The state of Delaware is served by six highways namely US Route 9, US Route 13, US Route 40, US Route 113, US Route 301 and US Route 202 in addition; the state is interlinked by several state highways like Delaware Route 1, Delaware Route 9 etc.

Wilmington and Pennsylvania are connected with Maryland via US 13 and the main route DE Rt1 whereas Delaware Bay is connected with Wilmington and Dover through DE Rt 9. Both of them are north-south highways. Along with these, US 40 and DE Rt 404 are the two primary east-west route joining Maryland with New Jersy and Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland with Delaware beaches.

Delaware Turnpike and Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway are the two toll highways at Interstate 95 and DE Rt 1 running between Maryland and New Castle and Wilmington and Dover respectively.

Bicycle Route 1 of Delaware widens at the north-south portion of the state and it includes the places from Fenwick Island’s The Maryland border to the north Montchanin’s the Pennsylvania border.

The National Bridge Inventory involves fewer portion of the 1,450 bridges, say for sixty percent. And in this statistics, 30% were found to be developed prior to the year 1950. Moreover, De1Dot supervises around 95 percent.

Ferries

Delaware is operated by three ferries:
The Delaware Bay between Lewes, Delaware and Cape May. New Jersey is crossed by Cape May-Lewes Ferry
Nanticoke River southwest of Seaford is crossed by Woodland Ferry.
Delaware City along with Fort Delaware and Fort Mott at New Jersey is connected through Three Forts Ferry Crossing.

Delaware Rails and Bus Transportation

The two stations in Delaware along with Northeast Corridor where Amtrak runs, is in Newark and is named the Newark Rail station. More busier than it is the Wilmington Rail Station at Wilmington.

Claymount, Wilmington, Churchmans and Newark are also served by the SEPTA's R2 Regional Rail line. Norfolk Southern is the major freight railroad that connects Delaware Coast Line Railway and Maryland & Delaware Railroad, the two short lines that serves in Sussex County.

CSX is another railroad passing through New Castle County running parallel to Amtrak. The "Most Outstanding Public Transportation System" recognized by the American Public Transportation Association was DART.

For the elderly people, door-to-door service is provided by the subsidized taxi and paratransit modes of transportation.

Delaware Air Transportation

There isn't a commercial air service in the state and initially, the commercial airlines in Wilmington were served by New Castle Airport. Until its bankruptcy, Columbus, Ohio, Greensbro, and North Carolina were provided service through Skybus airlines.

Philadelphia International Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport are usually used by the passengers for domestic and international
