Officials in Delaware have replaced a sign honoring a Revolutionary War hero.
The original sign honoring Capt. Robert Kirkwood Jr. on Kirkwood Highway has been gone since at least 1985 after a crash on the highway wiped out the sign.
The original sign was at Polly Drummond Hill Road and that the new one is now in place at Kirkwood Library.
Born in 1756, Kirkwood was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Delaware Regiment when the Revolutionary War began. Made a captain in 1776 he lead troops in a number of battles, including the Battle of Brandywine in 1777, the war's only fight on Delaware soil.
