Repair work is under way on at least one Sussex County road damaged by recent flooding.
On Monday, crews began diverting water that flows near Route 20 (Stein Highway) outside of Seaford in preparation to lay new concrete, the Delaware Department of Transportation said.
Heavy rains from nearly a week and a half ago flooded many areas of Seaford. The water caused scouring along the footings of the Route 20 bridge and washed out part of the road.
Neighbors said flooding in 2006 led to similar problems on that same stretch of road. DelDOT spokeswoman Tina Shockley said the state is working on a long-term fix to avoid those problems in the future. Additional concrete is expected to help, Shockley said.
At least two other nearby roads remain closed because of flooding damage: Craigs Mill Road and Ellis Mill Road. DelDOT said it is unclear when repair work will begin.
It's unclear how much repair work to Route 20 will cost, Shockley said. Work is expected to continue until Sept. 23. Detours are posted.
