Court records show that a Wilmington man who is charged with fatally stabbing a New Castle County police officer has a long criminal history.
Records also show that 32-year-old David Salasky was on probation when he was arrested Friday at the scene of the killing of 44-year-old police officer Joseph Szczerba.
But the attorney general's office said Monday that despite his repeated criminal convictions, Salasky did not qualify for habitual offender status, which would have subjected him to a long prison sentence, perhaps even life behind bars.
Salasky is being held without bail on charges of first-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. He is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing on Sept. 26.
